Urban development: State Secretary hands over grant notifications in the town hall
Eberswalde is changing. This change is being actively shaped by the city's politicians and municipal administration. An important instrument in this is the urban development funding, which is financed in equal parts by the federal government, the state and the city of Eberswalde.
On Friday, 19 January 2024, Brandenburg's State Secretary in the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Planning, Mr Uwe Schüler (CDU), visited Eberswalde Town Hall. He had several grant notifications in his luggage. From the federal-state programmes Growth and Sustainable Renewal' (WNE) and
Social Cohesion' (SZH) programme, a total of 2.2 million euros will flow into the city. The funds provided will help Eberswalde to adapt its urban development and public spaces to future challenges. When added to the city's own contribution, this results in a total volume of 3.3 million euros for urban development projects.
As part of a cooperation agreement, the city of Eberswalde, Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft Eberswalde 1893 eG and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Planning (MIL) are working hand in hand to strengthen the Brandenburgisches Viertel as a liveable and attractive district; in addition to modernising the residential areas, the funding is being used to modernise the road network. The centre of Finow is also coming under the spotlight in a similar way. "Together, we want to maintain affordable housing that is suitable for all generations and at the same time invest in social infrastructure and public spaces. This integrated approach in Eberswalde is a real model for success," said Mr Uwe Schüler during his visit to Eberswalde.
In Eberswalde city centre, the focus is on the "administrative centre". Renovation work on the Old Town Hall, the so-called Baroque House, is due to be completed. Plans are also underway for the refurbishment of August-Bebel-Straße and Kantstraße.
Urban development funding is a federal and state funding programme that serves, among other things, to strengthen city centres, support housing construction and promote sustainable urban development. As a rule, the federal government, the state and the city each provide one third of the total funding. State Secretary Uwe Schüler handed over the corresponding funding decisions to the First Deputy Mayor and Head of the Building Department, Ms Anne Fellner.
"Of course, the receipt of funding is an ideal start for 2024. As a reliable and consistent partner, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Planning has been supporting Eberswalde's urban development for years. As a result, the city is constantly evolving and remains attractive to residents, students and visitors alike. Eberswalde underlines its position as an important driving force for the region," emphasises Anne Fellner.
