St John's neighbourhood officially opened
On the 6,000 square metre site at Gerichtsstrasse 7, where the former police station and courthouse stood a few years ago, a construction project that is particularly prominent in the cityscape has now been successfully completed.
On 31 May 2024, the new Johanniter Quarter Eberswalde celebrated its grand opening in the immediate vicinity of the city centre. This officially marked the end of a process that began in January 2019 with the demolition of the previous building. In August 2022, paediatrician Dr Rahab Mohamed became the first tenant to open her practice in the building. this was followed in May 2023 by the opening of the therapy centre with the Master of the Order of St John H.R.H. Dr Oskar Prince of Prussia. The day care centre followed in September 2023, before the first tenants moved in at the end of the year. They can now "make use of the concierge's support or the extensive range of services offered by the Johanniter, such as the transport service or outpatient care", as the Johanniter put it in their advertising flyer. The aim of serviced living is to enable residents to "live a self-determined life in their own four walls into old age".
The site includes 77 modern and barrier-free flats, a conservatory, a lounge for communal use, a green inner courtyard and much more. A daycare centre in sustainable timber construction is still under construction and will soon contribute to the intergenerational dialogue.
"Eberswalde wants to be a city for everyone. Openness to the world, tolerance, inclusion and empathy are the principles on which we organise and shape our daily work. Whether in urban development processes, education and culture, health, sport or socialising, no one - old or young, sick or healthy - should be forgotten or excluded. Urban development thrives on community, democracy and openness. The city of Eberswalde can therefore rejoice today, because with the opening of the new Johanniter neighbourhood in the heart of our city, another place of social responsibility has been created that unites all of these guiding principles," said Mayor Götz Herrmann in his welcoming address. The mayor also thanked all those involved in the project. All generations will be able to benefit from this institution, also with regard to medical care in the city of Eberswalde, according to the mayor.
In addition to the two doctors' surgeries, the BARMER health insurance company and the "Smilla Vanilla" café are also among the businesses overlooking the park on Weidendamm.
