Remembered past
March weekend with lectures at the Eberswalde Museum

The City of Eberswalde cordially invites you to two lectures as part of the exhibition "Ellen Auerbach and Lea Grundig - Two Women Artists in Palestine" at the Museum Eberswalde:
Saturday, 29 March 2025, at 3 pm
"Life goes on. Flight and exile of Eberswalde Jews"
by Ellen Grünwald
The lecture by Ellen Grünwald will be followed by a discussion with Barbara Tsur (granddaughter of Louis Feintuch).
Ellen Grünwald, from the initiative "Al Tishkach - Traces of Jewish Life in Eberswalde", will talk about the everyday life of Jewish families before and after 1933, unsuccessful escape attempts, the loss of their homeland and the new beginnings of Eberswalde's Jews in other countries. Barbara Tsur from Jerusalem will describe the escape of her mother, aunt and grandparents - the Feintuch family. Around 500 Jews lived in Eberswalde before 1933. They were merchants, doctors, lawyers, housewives, schoolgirls and schoolchildren. They worked, were involved in town politics, went to concerts and talked to their neighbours - their everyday lives were similar to those of the non-Jewish population. But this changed abruptly when the National Socialists came to power.

"Ellen Auerbach and Lea Grundig - contemporary witnesses and remembrance"
by Dr Kurt Winkler
The art historian Dr Kurt Winkler works as a curator, author and cultural consultant. In his lecture, he traces the theme of migration in image comparisons and text passages. As the author of a catalogue contribution to the current exhibition, he sheds light on the photographs by Ellen Auerbach and the drawings by Lea Grundig, which were created in Palestine. These works are moving in their immediacy. They capture encounters and everyday scenes that characterised the arrival of the two artists, who escaped Nazi persecution, in the country of migration. Their personal lives, caught between uncertainty and hope, are also reflected in the pictures and written testimonies.
